Re: Sprints 2025 - timetable and projects selected
Hi Tim and everyone,
at the very first hour of this sprint I was also frustrated with the ability of project server to serve already prepared tasks as it is seen on the status page. But after a night of sleep (that helps quite regularly) I decided to consider it (like I usually do) as the race conditions. That is exactly what makes this sprint unique and we should adapt. As always, let's make fun of it!
p.s. Still wondering of GPU effectiveness on these tasks. I'm going to dive in detailed stats now.

The project is not just slow to provide tasks. The site is broken. Neither BOINC nor browser can connect at all. And it's been this way for at least 14 hours now.

Hi
It's working perfectly well in UK. Home page loads up fine and server status page says:
HOWEVER: You should be aware that since last year when a DDOS attack, supposedly based in China, affected one of the FB Sprints, certain measures were put in place (by the project admins) to prevent significant downloads taking place - so if anyone was placing too high a demand on the server, then it is possible that accounts may be blacklisted.Tasks ready to send 952288
Tasks in progress 394352
Workunits waiting for validation 0
Workunits waiting for assimilation 4
Workunits waiting for file deletion 0
Tasks waiting for file deletion 0
Transitioner backlog (hours) 0.00
Server software version: 1.1.9
Database schema version: 27028
Task data as of 11 Apr 2025, 13:58:23 UTC
I got these PMs from the project admin last year:
andI have some news from admins, there was a DOS attack from China's network on the website 1000 to 8000 connections at a time. They took some preventive measures. It's hard to say if there's any connection with the Challenge though, it could be just a coincidence.
regardsthe attack started around 6th March 2024 19:30 UTC which corresponds to the start of the challenge
it was from a single IP 121.249.15.38
inetnum: 121.248.0.0 - 121.251.255.255
netname: NJR-CERNET
descr: China Education and Research Network
but you're right, it's most likely under a VPN, it could be anyone. We've blocked the network segment and improved the firewall to prevent such issues in the future.
other projects are also dealing with bad actors. I don't quite understand why, the only reason is to cause frustration and discourage other people from running projects and blaming project / challenge administrators for issues in the process...

Nope, the Server-Status-Page doesn't show all relevant informationsUBT - Timbo wrote: ↑Fri Apr 11, 2025 2:59 pm It's working perfectly well in UK. Home page loads up fine and server status page says:
I try to get work for 17 machines, but ALL are getting:

As my colleague (and many others) are seeing the same errors it seems not to be my network

Restarted all workstations
Still nothing works
Completed tasks are not being transferred
Task download is not progressing
On one computer, the completed tasks have been transferred, but new tasks are in the pipeline and are not progressing.
Other stopped projects have been restarted... no problems.
As of 4:30 PM CET

If the project is auto-banning IP addresses, then this sprint should be cancelled. And it should not be counted in any FB competitions until something changes.
FWIW, I still cannot connect to the project in any way.

Re: Sprints 2025 - timetable and projects selected
Hi
I have not been told which mechanisms have been implemented by the Asteroids project admins, so that the issues from March last year can be avoided. I provided the above information simply because it might be one reason why some FB members are having issues.
FWIW, I've had zero issues downloading tasks and uploading completed work units...but then I do not have a "farm" of host machines so I am hardly putting any strain on their server(s).
And looking at the FB Sprint stats, many other members do not seem to be having any problems:

So, maybe you should raise a PM on the Asteroids Message Board and they can check it out?

Tim
